What to Wear for NYC Engagement Photos: Style Tips for Couples

If you're looking forward to your NYC engagement photos, you’ve probably already asked yourself: "What should we wear?"

The short answer? Wear something that fits your vibe and personality as a couple.

As a romantic photographer in NYC, I've learned that the best engagement photos in NYC are usually the ones where people feel comfortable and are wearing something they love. Choosing the right outfit can elevate your photos, and it should also reflect your personality and your relationship.

Whether you're planning a session in Central Park, wandering through the West Village, visiting the Met, or grabbing coffee together between locations, here's my guide to choosing outfits that look stunning in photographs but also match your vibe.

Start With the Vibe You Want For Your NYC Engagement Photos

Before you start shopping or pulling pieces from your closet, think about the overall vision for your engagement photos in NYC.

Do you picture yourselves dressed up for a night out in the city? Walking hand-in-hand through Central Park in cozy sweaters? Exploring your favorite neighborhood coffee shop? Knowing the experience and vision you want to achieve for your session helps you choose the best outfit.

A couple planning a formal session around Grand Central or the New York Public Library might want to wear elegant dresses or tailored coats. While a couple spending the afternoon in Fort Tryon Park may be more comfortable in comfier outfits with softer textures or layers.

There's no "correct" or “perfect” look when it comes to NYC engagement photos. The goal is to just create photos that emulate your style and vibe as a couple.

Incorporating Personality Into Your Engagement Photos in NYC

You'll usually hear (or read) professional photographers recommend creams, beiges, earth tones, and neutrals. And there truly is a reason for that. These color palettes look really beautiful in photographs and work for almost every season, especially against New York City's architecture and parks.

But that doesn't mean your outfits NEED to be neutral if that's not your type of style.

If you love color, incorporate it intentionally. A colorful scarf, a statement coat, a bold pair of shoes, or even a bright bouquet can go a long way in adding personality to your photos without overwhelming the images.

If you're someone who loves florals, don’t be scared to add them. If vintage fashion is your thing, lean into it. If you always wear leather jackets, don't suddenly switch to something that doesn't match your personality just because Pinterest said so.

My best engagement photo ideas for NYC is to bring little details into your session that reflect who you are as a person and who you both are as a couple.

Coordinate, But Don’t Match

One of the biggest misconceptions about NYC engagement photos is that couples need to match.

Instead of matching each other perfectly, try coordinating with each other. Choose colors that complement one another and if one person is wearing an outfit with patterns, the other might wear something solid. If one outfit is formal, try to keep the other outfit formal as well, so everything feels balanced.

Have Fun With Outfit Changes

One thing I absolutely love as an engagement photographer in NYC is adding an outfit change. In fact, outfit changes are already included in my engagement photography packages because they add so much variety to your final gallery.

Many couples choose:

  • One chic or dressier look

  • One chill, everyday look

This combination gives you a great mix of photos and lets you mix up the vibe throughout the session. You can go from elegant city portraits to casual coffee-shop moments and use your outfits to set the mood.

Tips for Changing Outfits in NYC

Let's talk about the reality of changing your entire outfit in New York… Unlike other locations, we usually don't have a car parked nearby where we can store all of our things. Most sessions involve walking, public spaces, museums, parks, or neighborhoods.

Luckily for us though, outfit changes are still very doable!

Depending on the location, we might use a public restroom, find a private corner in a park, or get creative with garment bags and strategic positioning. During colder months, portable changing tents can work really well too.

My biggest tip as an NYC photographer? Keep things simple.

If it's just the three of us, try bringing only what you need. A small bag, one outfit change, and a few essentials will make the session a lot easier than if we’re carrying multiple bags around the city.

Bring a Friend To Help

If you're planning multiple outfit changes, bringing a bouquet, including your dog in the photos, or carrying extra shoes, having a friend tag along can be incredibly helpful.

Not only can they help you by holding a jacket or garment bag, but they can also make the entire experience a lot more relaxing and less stressful.

Bringing a friend is especially helpful if you're incorporating a pet into your session. Having someone available to help wrangle your furry friend during portions of the shoot allows us to change locations easily.

Tips For Museum Sessions

If part of your engagement photos in NYC will take place inside a museum, it's worth planning ahead.

A lot of museums here have restrictions on large bags or backpacks. Even if you're bringing an extra outfit, you'll want to keep your bag as small as possible. Plus, the less time we spend worrying about bulky bags and belongings, the more time we get to focus on creating heartfelt photos.

Dress for the Season

New York City’s weather changes dramatically throughout the year, and you’ll want to wear the proper outfit.

Spring sessions are the perfect time to wear lighter colors, and layers, as well as to add some floral touches.

Summer is best for breathable, lightweight fabrics that will keep you comfortable while out exploring the city.

Fall provides some of the best opportunities for layering. Coats, sweaters, scarves, and boots all look really chic in photographs.

Winter sessions can be incredibly cozy and stylish as well. Long coats, gloves, and hats all add visual interest while still keeping you warm.

My Best Tip For NYC Engagement Photo Outfits

At the end of the day, your outfit should make you feel comfortable. Some of the best photos are captured when you're focused on each other, not adjusting clothing, worrying about shoes, or wondering if something is "Instagram-worthy" enough.

When you’re comfortable and feel like yourself, everything else falls into place.

Most (if not all) people start a session feeling a little nervous. By the end of the session though, they're laughing, walking around the city, and having a genuinely good time.
