What to wear to a City Hall wedding in NYC?
There's a happy myth that a City Hall wedding means jeans and a courthouse hallway. It can, if that's your thing, but after photographing these all over NYC, I can tell you the couples who put a little thought into what they wear end up with photographs they're obsessed with for years. The good news: there are no rules here, only what feels like you. Here's what to wear to a City Hall wedding in NYC, what reads nicely on camera, and a few small touches that turn a two-minute ceremony into a real moment.
One thing upfront: City Hall and the Marriage Bureau have bright, mixed, often fluorescent lighting and busy backdrops. What you wear does a lot of the work in making the photos feel romantic and cinematic rather than clinical. So this isn't just about being fancy, it's about being intentional.
Here some ideas and references from All The Feels past couples and guests, and you can read more below!

For the partner in a dress (or whatever you love)
City Hall is the perfect excuse for the dress you'd never get to wear again:
A mini, midi, or slip dress in a fabric with a little movement photographs gorgeously, especially on a city walk afterward.
A vintage piece leans right into the nostalgic, timeless mood I love, and it's wonderfully personal.
A suit or jumpsuit is sharp, modern, and so easy to move through the city in.
Color is welcome. A soft ivory, a bold red, a buttery yellow, all read beautifully. If you go white, choose texture (lace, crepe, satin) so it doesn't flatten under the indoor lights.
A flowy tulle veil is my favorite little secret for City Hall. It's light, fits in a bag, and the second a breeze catches it on the courthouse steps you get the most romantic, cinematic frame of the whole day.

For the partner in a suit (or whatever you love)
Fit beats everything. A well-tailored suit in navy, charcoal, tan, or off-white photographs cleanly and timelessly.
Add texture or a little personality: a linen weave, a knit tie, a great pocket square, a vintage watch.
Tie or no tie are both right, open collar reads relaxed and modern; a tie reads classic. Either way, dress it up enough that you match the moment.
Shoes you can actually walk in. We'll likely roam a few blocks for portraits.
Colors and fabrics that photograph well
A few photographer's notes that make a real difference:
Texture over flatness. Lace, satin, linen, knit, and crepe all catch light and add depth; flat, matte fabrics can look dull indoors.
Skip tiny busy patterns, which can shimmer oddly on camera (called moiré). Solids and larger patterns are safer.
Coordinate, don't match. You want to look like you belong in the same photo, not like a themed set. Two tones in the same family is the sweet spot.
Dress for the season (and the walk)
NYC weather is part of the story. In winter, a beautiful long coat over your outfit is both practical and stunning on camera, and bare shoulders plus a city street equals about ninety seconds of comfort. In summer, breathable fabrics save you. Year-round, comfortable shoes matter, because the best City Hall photos almost always happen on the move.
The little touches that make it (my signature kit)
Here's where a quick ceremony becomes a celebration. These are the small, packable things I love bringing or suggesting, because they photograph beautifully and add real joy:
A tulle veil for movement and romance
Confetti for the steps right after you're married
Bubbles, which look so dreamy on camera
Mini prosecco splits with little flutes for an impromptu toast
Instant photos to hold in your hands that same day (we offer these!)
A flat "Just Married" sign that slips into a bag and makes a perfect transitional shot
What guests should wear
If you're attending a City Hall wedding, think elevated-but-easy: a nice dress, a suit, or smart separates. You'll likely move between the building and a celebration nearby, so comfortable shoes are your friend, same as everyone else.
Last minute? Here's where to find something in NYC without panicking
City Hall weddings happen fast, sometimes by design, sometimes because life moves that way. The good news is that New York is the best city in the world to find a beautiful outfit on short notice, and you don't need a bridal appointment to do it.
Same-day or next-day, in the city:
COS (SoHo, Broadway) — clean, architectural, European. Their dresses photograph nicely without reading as bridal, and the quality holds up. A genuinely good last-minute option.
Anthropologie + BHLDN (Financial District, 195 Broadway) — BHLDN is Anthropologie's bridal line, romantic and vintage-inspired, starting around $200. Worth a visit even if you think you don't need "bridal"
Nordstrom (Columbus Circle) — wide size range, in-store tailoring, and a real occasion dress selection. One of the few places in the city where you can walk in and walk out sorted.
Rent the Runway (459 W Broadway, SoHo) — if you want something genuinely special without buying it. Same-day pickup sometimes available; reservations recommended.
If you truly need something in under an hour and nothing else is open, & Other Stories, Zara, and Mango carry occasion dresses that work in a pinch, just know what you're getting.
Budget outfit ideas: brands to know
You don't need a $2,000 dress for a City Hall wedding to feel like yourself and look gorgeous in photos. These are the brands couples and real brides consistently recommend:
Reformation — the go-to for an effortless, slightly vintage silhouette. SoHo store (Mott St) or online. Dresses $150–$400; bridal line goes higher. Their satin midi styles come up constantly in elopement outfit discussions.
& Other Stories — European, elegant. Worth looking at for both partners.
Quince — online only, fast shipping, real silk and linen dresses for $100–$200. Search "silk midi dress" or "linen dress".
Free People / "With Love" bridal collection — if your vibe runs more bohemian, their flowy pieces look wonderful in motion and on film.
Azazie — made-to-measure bridal and formal from under $200, with a try-at-home program. Best if you have at least a week.
BHLDN (bhldn.com) — vintage-inspired, $200 and up, consistently well-reviewed.
For suits, blazer sets, and non-dress outfits: Club Monaco, Theory (SoHo), and Banana Republic deliver well-cut pieces in quality fabrics that hold up on camera and in person.
Vintage shopping in NYC: the best in-person spots
A vintage find is the ideal City Hall outfit — one-of-a-kind, full of personality, often less expensive than you'd think. NYC's vintage scene is genuinely world-class.
Manhattan:
Allegra Vintij (261 W 35th St, Garment District) — They have a dedicated bridal section and offer bridal appointments on allegravintij.com, so if vintage is your direction, they're genuinely worth contacting first.
Desert Vintage (34 Orchard St, LES) — beautifully curated archival pieces. More of a splurge but the quality is extraordinary.
Treasures of NYC (69 Mercer St, SoHo) — appointment-based showroom; vintage Chanel, Galliano-era Dior, Fendi. Call ahead.
James Veloria (75 East Broadway, 2nd floor of the Chinatown mall) — neon-hued, pink-heart-cut-wall, incredible curation. Takes a minute to find but consistently worth it.
Duo NYC (E 9th St area, East Village) — minimal aesthetic, great for someone who wants something understated and impeccable.
Brooklyn:
Awoke Vintage (Bedford Ave, Williamsburg) — one of the most-recommended vintage stores in NYC. Gets packed on Saturdays; weekdays are better.
Amacord Vintage (223 Bedford Ave, Williamsburg) — strong 1940s–60s silhouettes and matching sets; solid menswear section too.
Stella Dallas Living (281 N 6th St, Williamsburg) — known for vintage silks, lace, and blouses. 10 Ft Single is right next door.
Mirth Vintage (Greenpoint) — organized by color, making it surprisingly easy to shop. Accessories too.
Kalimera (99 Montrose Ave, Bushwick) — sources from Greece and Italy, moderate-to-affordable pricing, great 90s pieces for both partners.
Where to shop online (and what to search)
Sites worth knowing:
Reformation (thereformation.com) — search "bridal," "white dresses," or browse dresses generally.
BHLDN (bhldn.com) — Anthropologie's bridal line, romantic and vintage-inspired.
Revolve — modern, elevated, fast shipping, good size range.
ThredUp / Poshmark — for secondhand non-bridal pieces at a real price. Search: white satin midi, ivory slip dress, cream linen dress.
The RealReal — if you want something genuinely special (vintage designer) at a consignment price.
Etsy — search "City Hall wedding dress," "elopement dress," or "minimalist bridal." Quality varies; check reviews and production timelines carefully.
Search terms when you don't want anything coded as "wedding": These pull up gorgeous results on lots of websites and Google Shopping without the bridal price inflation.
satin midi dress · silk slip dress · ivory linen dress · cream blazer set · white wrap dress · minimalist occasion dress · linen co-ord set · ivory wide leg trousers · tailored white suit
Happy shopping!
