There's a particular kind of magic to New York at sunrise, before the crowds, when the light is soft and gold and the whole city feels like it's holding its breath. That's exactly when I met Amir and Anna at Little Island. They've been together a deeply loving time, and on a trip to New York they couldn't wait to capture their love on camera. A sunrise couples photoshoot at Little Island gave us the best of everything: gorgeous early light, a stunning setting almost entirely to ourselves, and two people clearly, happily smitten.

Here's how their romantic, candid couples session came together.

Why Little Island is perfect for a couples photoshoot NYC

Little Island is one of the most special spots in the city for a couples photoshoot NYC. The elevated park rises out of the Hudson on its sculptural tulip-shaped pillars, with winding paths, lush gardens, and quiet little overlooks tucked throughout. Around every corner there's a fresh backdrop, layered greenery, dramatic architecture, and sweeping views of downtown Manhattan and One World Trade rising across the water. For a couples session, it feels like several locations in one, which means real variety without ever rushing across the city. If you love this kind of scenery, my guide to the best NYC photo locations has more spots in the same spirit.

The case for a sunrise session

Choosing sunrise was the secret to this whole shoot. Little Island gets busy as the day goes on, but in those first golden hours it was peaceful and uncrowded, just Amir and Anna, the gardens, and the glowing skyline. The light at sunrise is soft, warm, and impossibly romantic, the kind that makes couples photos feel cinematic and timeless. It does mean an early alarm, but for photos like these, it's always worth it. (If mornings aren't your thing, golden hour at sunset is the lovely runner-up.)

A couple visiting NYC, head over heels

Some of my favorite sessions are with couples visiting New York who want to remember the trip as more than a camera roll. Amir and Anna are newly and genuinely in love, and that easy, giddy connection is a dream to photograph. My approach is candid and documentary by nature, so rather than stiff posing, we simply wandered the island, talked, laughed, and let the real moments unfold. The result is a gallery that actually looks like them, unscripted, warm, and full of feeling. If being in front of a camera makes you nervous, my notes on camera-shy couples explain exactly how I keep it relaxed.

What to know if you want a session like this

A few things that made this couples photoshoot work so beautifully, and that I'd suggest for yours:

  • Start at sunrise for the best light and the fewest crowds, especially at popular spots like Little Island.

  • Wear what feels like you, in soft, coordinated tones, and bring a second look if you'd like variety.

  • Plan for movement. We walked around a bit, so comfortable shoes help.

  • Let go of perfection. The candid, in-between moments are always the ones you'll treasure most.
