Many of New York City's parks are perfect for intimate weddings and elopements, and in many instances, you won't need a permit for your wedding photos if your photographer is using handheld equipment.
Depending on the time of year, the same park can have a completely different look. From soft cherry blossoms in the spring to colorful fall foliage later in the year; season can be just as important as location when choosing your NYC park wedding.
As a romantic photographer in NYC for over 17 years, I've learned that choosing the right location isn't just about finding one that's beautiful. It's about finding a place that's meaningful to you as a couple and reflects your personalities through the photos.

When Do You Need a Permit for NYC Park Weddings?
For most small weddings and elopements, you generally won't need a photography permit if you're using handheld cameras and keeping your group small.
Permit requirements vary depending on the park and the type of ceremony or photography you're planning. Many parks allow small weddings and portrait sessions using handheld camera equipment without a photography permit, while larger groups, ceremonies, or professional equipment may require additional approval.
Because these parks are managed by different organizations (including NYC Parks, the Central Park Conservancy, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and New York State Parks) each location has its own photography and event policies. Before making final plans, I always recommend checking the official guidelines for the specific park you'll be using, since requirements can change over time.
One thing that's worth noting is that not all of Central Park follows the same permit process. Most of the park falls under NYC Parks, where permits for ceremonies and events are handled through the city's permit system.
The Conservatory Garden, however, is managed separately by the Central Park Conservancy and has its own application process, policies, and pricing for weddings and photography.
Most couples planning intimate NYC park weddings won't run into any issues at all, but it never hurts to cover your bases.

Best NYC Park Weddings for Iconic NYC Views
Central Park
It's impossible to talk about NYC park wedding photos without mentioning Central Park.
I know it's popular, but there's a reason for that. Between Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, Conservatory Garden, Belvedere Castle, and countless other quiet paths hidden throughout the park, there's an incredible variety of scenery all within one location.
In the spring, Central Park comes alive with flowering trees and freshly budding trees, while autumn features vibrant shades of gold, orange, and red throughout the park. If your elopement date is flexible, picking the right season can completely change the look of your gallery.
Morning and evening are some of my favorite times to photograph here as an NYC wedding photographer. The golden light is super romantic, the park is calmer, and it's easier to enjoy the experience without the huge crowds.
Central Park does require a special event permit to reserve part of the park for groups with more than 20 people gathering, or if you want to make sure it's reserved for you and there is no other event in progress at the same time, at that location. Not all special places can be reserved in the park (eg. Summerhouse at the Dene does not have that option), and for those locations, the best approach is to arrive early and prepared. I've found that this website is the easiest to use and most cost-effective when it comes to Central Park photography permits.
The Central Park Conservatory Garden is a beautiful spot for photos or an event, like a wedding. It's operated separately from Central Park and requires a permit. It's a simple process, and just needs to be done ahead of time.

Brooklyn Bridge Park
If you love skyline views (and also waterfront views), Brooklyn Bridge Park is hard to beat.
Spring flowers add a little extra color to the waterfront paths, while the cool air and warm tones of fall create a beautiful contrast against the city's skyline.
Each pier is a little different from the other, differing from open waterfront views to gardens and walkways overlooking Lower Manhattan. The combination of the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the city skyline creates a truly iconic background in New York.
Brooklyn Bridge Park has its own photography guidelines. Smaller portrait sessions using handheld equipment are generally straightforward, but larger groups, ceremonies, or additional equipment may require approval. It's always worth reviewing the park's current policies before your wedding day.

Empire Fulton Ferry
Just next to Brooklyn Bridge Park is Empire Fulton Ferry, a smaller waterfront park that's often grouped together with Brooklyn Bridge Park, even though they're technically two separate locations.
This area has a slightly different vibe, with beautifully maintained lawns, a quaint boardwalk, and Jane's Carousel. A lovingly restored historic carousel that adds a fun, nostalgic touch to your photos.
It's also home to the Empire Stores, a collection of shops and offices housed inside beautifully restored Civil War-era warehouse buildings. The mix of historic brick architecture, waterfront views, and skyline backdrops gives you plenty of variety without needing to travel far.
During the warmer months, the surrounding lawns and gardens add plenty of greenery, making it a really great choice for spring and summer weddings.
Because it's right beside Brooklyn Bridge Park, it's easy to incorporate both locations into the same elopement session or wedding portraits, giving you everything from iconic bridge views to charming architectural details within just a short walk.
Washington Square Park
If you're looking for a park that screams "New York", Washington Square Park is a great choice. The iconic Washington Square Arch instantly gives your photos that downtown NYC look, while the fountain, tree-lined walkways, and lively atmosphere create a fun mix of classic architecture and city energy.
In the fall, the trees surrounding the arch add warm tones to the park, while spring offers fresh green colors that contrast with the downtown setting.
It's an especially good fit for couples who want wedding portraits that are urban and full of character without ever leaving Manhattan.

Best NYC Park Weddings for Skyline & Waterfront Photos
Hunters Point South Park
If you love a cleaner, more modern aesthetic, Hunters Point South Park is a fantastic option.
Located in Long Island City, this waterfront park features boardwalks, open lawns, and incredible views of Midtown Manhattan, including the Empire State Building.
Sunset is especially beautiful here year-round, but summer evenings often give you the longest window for golden-hour photos along the water.
The wide-open space helps it feel less crowded while still giving you that iconic New York skyline.
Gantry Plaza State Park
Another location that's often confused with Hunters Point South Park is Gantry Plaza State Park. While the two parks sit next to each other along the Long Island City waterfront, they're separate places.
The park is known for its restored industrial gantries, which once helped load railcars and barges along the East River. Today, those historic structures create one of the most recognizable landscapes on the Queens waterfront, especially with the Manhattan skyline, the Empire State Building, and the United Nations visible across the river.
Beyond the awesome skyline views, Gantry Plaza State Park has beautifully maintained gardens, four waterfront piers, a charming mist fountain, and wide walking paths that make it easy to wander from one space to the next. It's a wonderful choice if you're looking for a location that combines New York City's industrial history with open waterfront views and a quieter atmosphere than many of Manhattan's most popular spots.
Spring and early summer are really enjoyable here when the gardens are in bloom, and adding some soft colors to the park's industrial character.

Astoria Park
Astoria Park is an uncommon gem, which makes it a great unique location.
The waterfront promenade stretches alongside the East River with panoramic views of both the Hell Gate Bridge and the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. Between the river views, dramatic bridges, old trees, and open skies your photos will have a unique look that's different from Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Because of its wide-open waterfront, Astoria Park is beautiful in every season, especially during sunset when the light reflects across the East River and bridges.
As a city park, you’ll need to follow the posted park guidelines for photography.

Best NYC Park Weddings for Quiet, Romantic Ceremonies
Fort Tryon Park
Fort Tryon Park is one of those places that doesn’t come to mind right away, but makes sense once you think about it.
Located in Upper Manhattan, it features views of the Hudson River, beautiful stone pathways, gardens, and the exterior of The Met Cloisters. It’s a really peaceful environment without requiring you to leave the city.
The gardens are really beautiful in late spring and early summer, while fall colors make the stone architecture stand out even more.
If you love stone architecture but also want greenery, this is a great option for couples looking for something a little different than Central Park.
Carl Schurz Park
Carl Schurz Park is surprisingly intimate for being right in Manhattan.
The riverside, elegant stone railings, gardens, and views overlooking the East River create a relaxed vibe that looks really beautiful in NYC park wedding photos.
Because it's also home to Gracie Mansion, the scenery is filled with a timeless elegance that still feels welcoming and quaint.
In the spring, flowering trees and fresh gardens add color to the waterfront, while autumn creates a cozy atmosphere with colorful leaves lining the walkways.

Riverside Park
For something quieter, Riverside Park offers a completely different vibe. One of my favorite spots is the 91st Street Community Garden, a volunteer-maintained garden tucked away along the promenade that feels like a hidden neighborhood gem. Movie lovers may even recognize it from You've Got Mail.
Just a short walk away, Cherry Walk features beautiful riverside views and flowering cherry trees in the spring, making Riverside Park a wonderful option for couples who want a relaxed location with plenty of greenery.
If you're hoping for cherry blossom wedding or elopement photos without the larger crowds found in some other parks, Cherry Walk is definitely worth considering during peak bloom in the spring.
City Hall Park
If you're planning a small City Hall ceremony, City Hall Park is an easy and beautiful place to celebrate your NYC park wedding.
Surrounded by historic government buildings, mature trees, and open lawns, it offers a nice balance of architecture and greenery just steps from City Hall itself. It's especially convenient for couples having a City Hall wedding and then taking portraits nearby, and you're only a short walk from the Brooklyn Bridge if you'd like to continue your session with even more iconic New York City park locations.

The Vale of Cashmere
Hidden inside Prospect Park, the Vale of Cashmere is a little like a secret garden. Stone pathways, historic balustrades, lush greenery, and a hidden pond create an experience that's very different from the busier parks in Brooklyn.
The space has a fascinating history. Originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, it was later redesigned in the Beaux-Arts style by McKim, Mead & White and eventually earned its name from the Thomas Moore poem Lalla Rookh. Today, it's a unique location in Prospect Park for romantic NYC park wedding photos.
Spring and summer make the space feel especially secluded, while fall brings rich colors that look great against the historic stone details.

Inwood Hill Park
