Planning a surprise proposal in New York City can feel like equal parts excitement and nerves, and if you’re hiring a proposal photographer in NYC, you probably have a lot of questions about how it all works.
How do we stay hidden? What happens if it rains? How fast do you get your photos? Don’t worry: after capturing more than 200 proposals across the city, I’ve answered all of these questions (and then some). Below, I’m sharing everything you need to know about what to expect before, during, and after your big “yes” moment, straight from an experienced NYC proposal photographer’s perspective.
1. Logistics & Coverage
How do you photograph proposals — hidden, visible, or a mix?
A mix! I usually stay hidden or blend naturally into the environment during the proposal, pretending to be a tourist or photographing the surroundings. The moment you drop to one knee, I step in seamlessly to capture every emotion. Afterward, I shift into relaxed portraits and celebration photos.
How early do you arrive before the proposal?
It depends on the location, but I always arrive at least 10-15 minutes before you do to scout the scene, check crowds, and confirm positioning.
How long do you stay after the proposal?
That depends on your proposal photography package. The most popular options are:
1 hour: Proposal + portraits
2 hours: Multiple locations or a mini city adventure
5 hours: For longer storytelling sessions, like proposals followed by celebrations or a full soak in the city
Can you help with positioning and planning?
Yes! I’ll guide you on where to stand, which direction to face, and how to approach the spot, all based on light and surroundings. You won’t need to guess a thing on the day.
What’s the best time of day for proposal photos in NYC?
The best time for proposal photos in NYC is typically during golden hour (about an hour before sunset) when the light is soft, warm, and flattering. In Central Park; if you're an early bird, early mornings are also beautiful and far less crowded.
2. Discretion & Communication
How do you stay hidden so it’s a real surprise?
I’ve mastered the art of blending in, whether that means pretending to photograph architecture, hiding behind trees in Central Park, or shooting from a crowd using a zoom lens. Your partner will have no idea until the moment happens (well, unless they already know...).
How do we communicate the day of the proposal?
You’ll have my number, and I’ll text when I’m in position. We’ll also share live locations so we can coordinate easily (and discreetly).
3. Photo Style & Deliverables
Can I see examples of your proposal work?
Absolutely! You can see past galleries here. Each proposal is different, but my goal is always the same: genuine, cinematic, and full of heart.
What’s your editing style?
Timeless, romantic, and cinematic. I focus on natural tones with an nostalgic touch, colors that feel true to the day without looking overly processed.
How many photos will I receive?
Typically, 100-150 fully edited images for a one-hour session (often more depending on the flow). Every image is hand-edited and delivered in high resolution, no watermarks, no limits on downloads or printing.
How fast is your turnaround?
Proposals are prioritized, so galleries are delivered within a few days, up to one week.
4. Backup & Reliability
What if it rains or the location gets crowded?
Welcome to NYC, we adapt! ☔ If the forecast looks tricky, I’ll suggest stunning covered or indoor-friendly options like Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library, or Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. I also love clear umbrellas, they photograph nicely and keep the romantic vibe alive.
If weather really doesn’t cooperate, rescheduling is always an option. You can read more about how we handle rainy days in this blog post.
What if we’re running late or the timing changes?
Proposals run on emotion, I get it! I stay flexible within your booked session time and always communicate clearly the day of. If something unexpected happens, we’ll adjust where possible.
