Planning Your Empire State Building Surprise Proposal (2024 Edition)

Capturing this proposal at the Empire State Building was an experience I'll never forget. There's something undeniably magical about NYC at night—the city lights shimmering below, the hum of life, and the iconic skyline that never loses its charm. When Chris reached out to plan his surprise proposal, we knew we were about to create something truly special.

We decided on a nighttime setting to capture the city in all its illuminated glory. The sparkling lights of Manhattan provided a breathtaking backdrop as Chris got down on one knee. The look of surprise and joy was priceless—a genuine moment of love and excitement against the twinkling canvas of the city that never sleeps.

After the big question (and a resounding "yes!"), we wandered around the deck, capturing candid moments of the newly engaged couple soaking in the views. The Empire State Building offers such a unique atmosphere at night—romantic, intimate, and quintessentially New York. I'm so grateful to have been part of their special moment!

Tips and Tricks for your Empire State Building Proposal

Thinking of popping the question at the Empire State Building?

Here's everything you need to know to make it an unforgettable experience:

1. Understand the Restrictions

  • Commercial Photography Is Not Allowed: The Empire State Building prohibits commercial photography without prior permission. This means professional photographers can't openly shoot proposals as part of their business. Security is strict, and cameras may be checked. However, many have navigated this by using discreet equipment or capturing the moment candidly. Always be respectful of the rules and understand there's a chance professional equipment may not be allowed.

2. Purchase Express Tickets in Advance

  • Skip the Lines: Opt for the Express Pass tickets. The standard admission can have you waiting in line for up to two hours, especially during peak times. The Express Pass allows you to bypass the crowds, giving you more time to focus on the moment.

  • Ticket Options: Consider visiting both the 86th and 102nd-floor observatories for different perspectives. The 102nd floor offers a more intimate setting with floor-to-ceiling windows.

3. Timing Is Everything

  • Choose Off-Peak Hours: Late at night or early weekday mornings are less crowded. The Empire State Building is open until 2 AM, so proposing during these times can offer more privacy and a romantic ambiance.

  • Weather Considerations: Keep an eye on the forecast. Fog or overcast conditions can obstruct the view, so try to pick a clear night for those breathtaking cityscape backgrounds.

4. Plan the Proposal Spot

  • Observation Deck Strategy: The 86th-floor deck can get crowded. Scout out a spot beforehand, perhaps on the less busy sides of the deck. Remember, you can't reserve or block off any areas unless planning your proposal directly with the ESB team.

  • Be Prepared for the Wind: It gets windy up there sometimes! Ensure you're both dressed appropriately.

5. Celebrate Afterwards

  • No On-Site Celebrations: The Empire State Building doesn't allow decorations, alcohol, or private celebrations on the deck. Plan to celebrate at a nearby restaurant or bar afterwards.

  • Nearby Photo Opportunities: After the proposal, consider visiting nearby spots for additional photos.

6. Capture the Moment Discreetly

  • Photography Tips: Since professional photography is restricted, consider using a small, high-quality camera or even a smartphone to capture candid moments. Alternatively, we can discuss ways to document your proposal while respecting the venue's policies.

  • Embrace the Candid: Sometimes, the best photos are unplanned and spontaneous. Focus on enjoying the moment, and the emotions will shine through in any photos captured.

7. Communication Is Key

  • Plan Ahead: Discuss your proposal plan with any friends or family involved, while keeping it a surprise for your partner.

  • Have a Backup Plan: In case of unforeseen circumstances (like weather or security restrictions), be ready with an alternative location or time.
